LWM Code of Conduct:

LWM is a great masters swim team not because we are fast and dedicated, but because we are caring and respectful at all times to everyone we encounter. At the heart of this team is the collective understanding that everyone deserves respectful treatment from the coach and fellow swimmers.

A culture of respect and good swimming etiquette is more than just swimming in “circles”. Respect means putting the needs of others before your own. You may be tired at the end of a hard 200, but good etiquette demands that you always make room for a swimmer behind you to finish at the wall. Etiquette means letting someone move ahead when you switch to breaststroke, or you move ahead when using paddles. When everyone takes responsibility for making everyone else’s workout as great as possible, we all have fun, and we all win.

And a culture of respect is built on etiquette beyond the swim set. All members of LWM must respect their teammate’s and pool staff’s person, space, privacy, beliefs, and choices.

Our team is filled with old friends who tease and are comfortable standing around in Lycra in front of strangers, so sometimes it can be hard to tell where the respectful boundaries are. But there are still boundaries. Flirting, sexualizing conversations, off-color jokes, and personal questions are minefields we should always stay clear of.

Other examples of disrespect include commenting on a teammates body, touching them without consent, giving unsolicited advice, criticizing their effort, or boasting.

LWM Member’s Pledge;

By registering for Lake Washington Masters I accept that my membership is conditional on my willingness to adhere to the code of etiquette and respect outlined above both at the pool and at any team gathering. Failure to live up to these basic tenets of civil behavior will lead to the immediate termination of my membership. If I am asked to leave the team, I understand that there are no appeals and I should expect no refunds.
